Wasn’t expecting to see this in the shop at school! Such a cool setup and it’s a shame GM abandoned it after three or so model years. Fun fact: Quadrasteer was offered on the GMC Yukon XL and the Chevy Suburban 2500. Probably made those beasts far easier to deal with in tight parking lots.

How good would this be for drifting?

Quadrasteer is by far one of the most underrated truck options ever made. Yeah it was a little complicated and expensive. But guess what? It made the GM trucks have turning circles like midsized sedans.

Interesting; I’ve never seen one up close before. Is that an electric rack? I imagine there must be some kind of steering angle sensor up front to dictate its movement.

GM, always ahead and behind the times.

Quadrasteer is awesome!!! Too bad they don’t offer it anymore. Of course, the only problem was cost. Originally the option was some $4500 extra, but eventually they lowered it to $2000, which was below cost.

Very true. I think it was something like a $4k option when it came out and that’s why it never took off. I’ve had the opportunity to “drive” one around a parking lot once and it was SO weird feeling the rear end drift out on turns. Extremely cool though!

To be honest, I’m not entirely sure if it’s electronic or hydraulic. I didn’t have much time to inspect it before I had to start filling out job sheets about random ignition bullshit haha

Perhaps this could be grafted on to a new GM truck? Any chances?

A wild quadrasteer appears.

Apparently using my google fu, Quadrasteer trucks need diff fluid changes every 15k. Ugh.

Ya, it was damn expensive. The truck was kinda weird. A 1500, but HD. People would pony up the money for the Denali trim but not want to shell out a few grand more to make their truck arguably better? It’s confusing and awesome at the same time haha

Yep I read that earlier. It sucks, but that’s the price you pay for the convenience/awesomeness of Quadrasteer! haha

As good as you want it to be. The Quadrasteer can be turned off/on whenever the driver desires. It would be a riot drifting the truck with it turned on!

They (Delphi) got pretty far into developing it for the GMT900 generation trucks, as well as the Nissan Titan, but neither one survived past the prototype stage.

Yep, electric rack on what is basically a GMC Topkick front axle. It has a rotation sensor similar to a video game wheel to determine rear angle, in conjunction with wheel speed sensors to tell it to turn in faze, or out of faze with the front end.

Fun fact: I sold so many Yukon XLs with QuadraSteer simply by taking the prospect to a parking lot and letting them try to hit a curb.

A QuadraSteer 1500 Denali is on my list of “Damn, I’d like to have one of those". AWD, "High Output" 6.0, all those amenities. Mmmmmm...

My favorite questionable/racist anti-Toyota truck sticker is still “My truck was built with wrenches, not chopsticks.”

The irony that most Toyota pickups sold in the states are made in Texas or California is strong. The engines are even made in the states.

I didn’t even know the Yukon/Suburban were offered with Quadrasteer until tonight after reading up on it a bit! I can’t imagine how much easier it would be to drive a car like that with Quadrasteer.

Anybody know of any documented cases where folks hit stuff because of the system? It seemed to me that rear end swinging out like that would catch some folks off guard especially in tight spaces...

Yep it's electric, you can see the motor and cables.

It’s electric, unlike the early Nissan HICAS systems (which eventually went electric). You can see the motor and cable just left of the diff.

Yeah, I wasn’t sure if there were hydraulics hiding in that loom or not. But when I looked at the Leaning Tower of Pisa there, I figured it had to be an electric motor.

Neat system.

I’d like to hack one so it can be independently controlled like the rear steer on a monster truck. Freak people out by crabbing the truck down the road

Used to have one. ‘03 Sierra 1500HD 6.0L. It was awesome and I wish I still had it. Thought about getting another one but they’re so rare and I don’t even remotely need a truck.

From what I’ve read, they’re actually pretty damn reliable! They just need a fluid change every 15k miles which kinda sucks.
